Freshwater Beach NSW

Freshwater Beach is one of my favourite beaches in Sydney.

Hedged between Manly and Curl Curl, Freshwater is where surfing was introduced to Australia on 15 January 1915 by Hawaiian 'Duke' Kahanamoku, who carved a surfing board from a piece of local timber and demonstrated the sport to a captive crowd. There is now a statue of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku on the headland.

The beach also has a 50 metre rock pool that was the first one built on the northern beaches. Following the path that leads to the swimming pool is Fisherman's Walk. A short and relaxing walk with fantastic views of the ocean.

There are also the cafes and kiosks, and more than anything else the shady park with tables and electric barbecues to get together with your friends and family while the kids play on the playground close by.

I go there often with my family. One Sunday afternoon I took a reference photograph standing on top of the rocks that surround the rock pool. From there the colour of the sea is absolutely amazing.

I painted this oil on canvas using that photo as a reference.
